Welcome to Scripps Health: A World of Healing

About the Foundation

In 1924, Ellen Browning Scripps made charitable gifts to create Scripps Memorial Hospital and Scripps Metabolic Clinic. Since then, Scripps has evolved into San Diego’s premier health care provider, with a proud history of providing excellent care for the people of San Diego. Now with four acute-care hospitals on five campuses, a network of clinics, home health and 2,600 affiliated physicians, Scripps continues to raise the bar.

Over the years, philanthropy has played a critical role in Scripps’ growth. The Copley Tower at Scripps La Jolla; the Shiley Center for Orthopaedic Research and Education at Scripps Clinic; the Leichtag Family Birth Pavilion at Scripps Encinitas; the Dickinson Intensive Care Unit at Scripps Mercy Chula Vista and cardiac catheterization labs at Scripps Mercy San Diego, are just a few examples of how generous donors have invested in the health of their community.

Your philanthropic investment in Scripps pays concrete dividends, with both immediate and long term returns. Our work includes providing life-saving mammograms to women who might not otherwise discover breast cancer until it’s too late, to funding research at Scripps Clinic that prompts fundamental change in future health care practices.

One need only look at the historical record to see the equity a wise philanthropic investment can yield. Ellen Browning Scripps’ 1924 investment in a small community hospital and clinic has yielded five hospital campuses and a network of outpatient clinics throughout San Diego.
